Foam Ant

Foam Ant

Hook: Dry fly hook #16 or #18
Body: Strip of black Foam, tied flat on hook shank most of the way down the bend, then folded over and tied off in segments
Hackle: Black, hook size

I was made aware of this version of the ant by my friend Dean Umemoto. He got it from guide Mark James. The secret to its success is tying the strip in most of the way down the back of the hook bend, then bending it over and creating segments by tying off sections here and there. The curved hump in back makes this a deadly fly, one that's nearly cheating in the summer.
