Classic Salmon and Trout Flies
of Europe and the Americas
Fran Friesen -- Artist of Stone

Art has always been an integral part of my life. The year I graduated from Art College in 1996 fly fishing and fly tying entered my life with a vengeance and with it the subject of my art evolved to reflect this passion. I work mostly with Acrylic Gouache and mixed media. When one of my mixed media paintings which included a fairly detailed painting of a fly was seen by a television fishing show producer, he asked if I could paint one on a river rock to be used in filming underwater. This triggered a series of palm sized painted rock flies which I have sold at a Fly Fishing Event and in local shops. Photographs of these images I also use on Greeting Cards. At present I am working on a commission of 50 large Rock Flies that also includes a series of images of wild flowers and trout food insects that emerge at similar time. These will be incorporated into an outdoor patio border. One of the enjoyable aspects of the Rock Flies is combing the riverbeds for suitable rocks adding yet another dimension to fly fishing.

More examples of my fly and fishing art may be seen at FlyBC Gallery.
